Meet the birds behind the brushstrokes

Meet the birds behind the brushstrokes

One of the joys of Madeleine Floyd's artwork is the way it shines a spotlight on the wildlife we often take for granted.

Many of the birds featured on our mugs are familiar visitors to British gardens, parks and hedgerows. We may see them every day, but through Madeleine's illustrations they take on a whole new level of character and charm.

Robin

Few birds are as iconic as the robin. Known for its distinctive red breast and confident personality, it's often one of the first birds to approach when we're working or relaxing outdoors. A familiar sight throughout the year, the robin remains a firm favourite.

Blue Tit

Bright, energetic and endlessly curious, the blue tit is one of Britain's best-loved garden birds. Its striking blue and yellow colouring makes it instantly recognisable, while its playful nature has earned it plenty of admirers.

Starling

Often overlooked at first glance, the starling reveals extraordinary detail up close. Its dark feathers shimmer with iridescent shades of green and purple, speckled with soft spots. Sociable and full of character, starlings are also known for their dramatic murmurations, moving together in mesmerising patterns across the sky.

Greenfinch

With its subtle green plumage and flashes of yellow, the greenfinch brings understated beauty to gardens and woodland edges. Madeleine's illustration captures the bird's elegance while preserving its distinctive character.

Song Thrush

The song thrush is admired for both its appearance and its remarkable singing ability. Its beautifully spotted breast and rich, melodic song have made it a treasured part of the British countryside for generations.

What makes Madeleine Floyd's interpretations so appealing is that they never feel overly formal or scientific. Instead, they capture the spirit of each bird. A tilt of the head, a curious expression or a lively pose is often all it takes to bring a familiar species to life.

Together, these designs celebrate the wildlife that shares our gardens and outdoor spaces. They remind us that nature doesn't always require a trip to the countryside. Sometimes it's right outside the window.

And occasionally, it's sitting beside your morning coffee.
